Told them Years Ago

Okay, so as you can see, this 39 weeks thing has really thrown me for a loop. Got at least four comics out of it so far, and one more to come before I start back with breastfeeding, World Breastfeeding Week is right around the corner!!!! …

mama says, “the average length of a natural pregnancy is 41 weeks but the quacks are inducing women at 39 weeks or sometimes 38 or 37 weeks. What do they think the final two to four weeks are for?”
Mama says, “a La LEche League Leader told me years ago that in the last two weeks the unborn baby develops it’s suck. Take the babies out early and BAM! They’ve undermined Breastfeeding too.”
Random Extra Anonymous Character says,”Hey, you’re being unfair! They’re learning that inductions at 37 and 38 weeks cause respiratory problems!
Mama responds, ” Puh-Lease! I’m not giving anyone kudos for suddenly realizing something that most midwives could have told them years ago!”
Baby thinks, “centuries!”

That Was the Past, Right?

Another one from this news article a friend sent me, here: New Baby Delivery Strategies Help to Cut Health Costs I actually drew this one first, but was so freaked out by the line “a full 39 weeks” that I did that comic and posted it first. I figured you guys would notice if I didn’t mention it right off the top!
There’s more coming! …

Duck says, “Hear ye! Hear Ye! We of the medical birth community proclaim that we make birth safer…”
Mama says, “Is that you quack?”
Duck: Um….Yeah.
Mama: Last time you were proclaiming that you made birth safer and more awesome, I showed you that your logic was faulty…”
…that the history of medical-ized birth is full of egregious failures and harmful practices!
Duck: ahem, that was ALL in the past.
Mama: Oh REally? what about this?
Duck: gulp.
paper: …inducing early childbirth…created unnecessary risk in newborns.
Mama: seems that all of those early inductions you guys are performing are causing respiratory problems in babies. hmmmm…when was this written? YESTERDAY.
Duck: that was the past, right?

A full 39 weeks

This came from a news article a friend sent me (thanks Julia!) here: New Baby Delivery Strategies Help to Cut Health Costs I foundthe article maddening on a few different levels, I think about 4 more comics are coming! …

Mama: Here it is…Indubitable, “39-weeks!” Crammed flippantly into the fourth paragraph in an article on health costs. “39-weeks!” It’s something we knew, or suspected…”full!” but to see it spelled out. tsk tsk. “births induced after a full 39-week pregnancy to births induced one to two weeks early…”
Get that?
“a full 39-week pregnancy”
Look it up: first births average 41 weeks, 1 day. That’s a 15 day discrepency!
Know what that means?
If you birth in a hospital and you don’t get induced it’s a freaking miracle.
